Women Transforming the Aviation Industry

At AirLink, we are proud to have many talented women in various areas of our organization, including engineers, pilots, and our Medical Operations Director. However, it was during a visit from MIAA (Women in the Aeronautical and Aerospace Industry) that we truly realized the impact we can have in inspiring the next generation.

MIAA promotes active participation and leadership among women in the aerospace and aviation sectors. We had the honor of welcoming their Project and Logistics Director, P.A. Leslie Cruz. It was an enriching day where we got to learn about their mission and values and share our experiences and challenges in the aviation world. Each of our colleagues passionately explained and demonstrated their work in areas such as Operations, Ambulance Services, SMS, Avionics, and Maintenance.

Discussions centered on how we can inspire the next generation. Eng. Hanya Vargas, our Operations, Dispatch, and Safety Engineer, shared her experience with school programs where they visited schools to inspire and excite young girls about aviation. Meanwhile, Dr. Blanca, our Medical Operations Director, highlighted that many women fear combining their careers with motherhood but emphasized that it is entirely possible. Additionally, MIAA is making significant efforts to promote breastfeeding as a right in civil aviation, even being invited to the Chamber of Deputies to explore how they can help secure this important right.

Leslie emphasized that, although MIAA is only two years old and still “in its infancy,” they have ambitious plans for the future. Their goal is to foster female participation while uniting and representing a collective voice for women in the industry.

They will be present at FAMEX 2025 (Mexican Aerospace Fair), where they will present a variety of aviation topics during a congress featuring expert speakers, including our Commercial Director.

We are thrilled to work together with MIAA to build a more equitable and diverse future in the aviation industry.

Master Class on Performance Based Navigation (PBN) for the Mexican Air Force.

Dirk explained the fundamental concepts of this navigation method, highlighting that, unlike traditional navigation methods that rely on conventional radio aids such as VOR or NDB, PBN is based on systems onboard the aircraft, such as GNSS, DME/DME, and inertial systems, among others.

The benefits of PBN translate into the ability to operate direct flight paths, which helps reduce fuel consumption, mitigate environmental impacts, increase the precision of procedures, and enhance air traffic capacity.  Furthermore, this method improves operational safety levels and implements enhanced noise abatement procedures.

Dirk mentions: “The amount of air traffic has increased exponentially in recent years; however, the dimensions of airspace remain the same, which is why it is necessary to implement new navigation procedures that allow for broader exploitation and increase the capacity of that airspace.”

With real-world examples from complex airports like Tegucigalpa (MHTG) in Honduras, Cuzco (SPZO) in Peru, or Kathmandu (VNKT) in Nepal, Dirk demonstrated technical applications where the use of PBN is essential.

Designs for standardized arrival procedures, such as the Point Merge System (PMS), were studied to avoid excessive vectoring and reduce the amount of communication on frequency. He also taught the appropriate phraseology in Spanish and English to future air traffic controllers to implement in PBN operations.

We hope this session has contributed to enriching their military careers and inspired the next generation of air traffic controllers.

To explore more about our PBN class, we would be happy to assist you. Contact us for more details.
